People in Precision – October: Scoring – Precision at the Final Step

This month, our “People in Precision” series turns to scoring, the process that prepares finished circuit boards for separation, and to the people at ASSxLHMT, our group company, who make it work.

Every month, “People in Precision” shines a light on the technologies that define our work and the colleagues who bring them to life. In October, the focus moves to the very end of circuit board production: scoring, the specialty of our group company ASSxLHMT.

By the time a panel reaches a scoring machine, it has already been through imaging, plating and drilling, so it carries the full value of everything that came before it. Scoring cuts precise V-shaped grooves into the top and bottom of the panel. These grooves create defined break lines, so the individual boards can be separated cleanly later without stress on components or traces. The critical figure is the remaining web, the thin layer of material left between the upper and lower groove. If the web is too thick, the boards do not break cleanly. If it is too thin, the panel loses stability during assembly. Holding that web consistently, panel after panel, is what defines a good scoring result.

Precise scoring depends on exact positioning. The machine aligns each panel on its reference holes, so the grooves follow the board layout and not just the panel edge. Depth is controlled from both sides, and automated loading and unloading handle the sensitive boards gently and keep the line running without interruption.

But the technology is only half the story. A scoring system is the product of many hands working in precision. Our machine building team turns concepts into rigid, high-accuracy hardware. Our software people translate board data into groove positions and depths that land exactly on target. Our designers shape systems and handling solutions that are as precise as they are reliable. And our service team keeps every machine performing at its best, long after it leaves our doors. Each of them contributes to a groove measured in microns.

That combination of technology and craftsmanship is exactly what “People in Precision” is about. In October, scoring reminds us that precision matters also at the last step, when everything that came before it is at stake.
