Every month, "People in Precision" shines a light on the technologies that define our work and the colleagues who bring them to life. In July, the focus falls on one of the most demanding steps in modern circuit board production: direct imaging.
Direct imaging does away with photomasks and films entirely. Instead of exposing photosensitive material through a physical tool, the pattern is exposed directly onto the board from digital data — light guided with extraordinary precision, exactly where it is needed and nowhere else. The result is finer lines, tighter registration, and the kind of repeatable accuracy that fine-line and HDI designs demand. Because there is no film to produce, store, or align, changeovers are faster and a whole category of potential defects simply disappears.
But the technology is only half the story. A direct imaging system is the product of many hands working in precision. Our machine building team turns concepts into robust, high-accuracy hardware. Our software people translate complex data into exposure that lands exactly on target. Our designers shape systems that are as precise as they are reliable. And our service team keeps every machine performing at its best, long after it leaves our doors. Each of them plays a part in an exposure measured in microns.
